Techniques & glazes![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I work with stoneware clays and glazes. The clays I used can be rough or smooth and in a variety of colours. The figures, as explained before are made in moulds. The larger garden pieces I make are hand built using coils (rolls of clay) which are gradually built up to form the shape I am looking for. The piece goes through a long process of scraping, smoothing and refining, before being fired at a temperature of about 1000°C. After this initial firing the piece will be covered with glazes (sometimes as many as three) which I mix myself and then is re-fired at a temperature of about 1260°C Porcelain![]() During the course of my recent studies I started using porcelain as a medium to explore the fragility of memories and feelings. Because I wanted to create layers of clay, I experimented with various ways of coating paper and ended up using kitchen towel dipped in slip and laid into plaster moulds. Knitting with wire![]() Continuing with the theme of women's occupations I experimented with wire, both fired and unfired and started knitting with it. I am not a conventionally good knitter but I know how to get the shapes I want by using basic stitches, increasing and decreasing. |
